BioNetworkBus:

The BioNetwork Mobile Laboratory
The BioNetwork Mobile Laboratory - called the BioNetworkBus - is the nation's only mobile laboratory designed to offer biotechnology-related incumbent and potential new-hire worker training. The Mobile Laboratory is a component of the BioNetwork Capstone Center, which is based at the Biomanufacturing Training & Education Center on NC State University's Centennial Campus.  While there are at least seven mobile laboratories around the country with a K-12 teacher and student focus, none have the focus of the BioNetworkBus, which offers worker training at company sites and local community colleges. The BioNetwork Mobile Laboratory offers accelerated laboratory-based biotechnology training to community college students in remote areas across the state and takes specialized equipment and experienced faculty straight to company sites for incumbent worker training. The BioNetwork Mobile Laboratory has visited companies such as Wyeth Vaccines in Sanford and Talecris in Clayton to offer training.  It has also been called upon by several national organisations to visit as an example of  a 'Best Practice' in incumbent worker training.   The mobile lab can offer Capstone Center short courses such as Microbial Identification to incumbent workers on site.  The mobile lab has been greeted with enthusiasm by the NC biomanufacturing industry, because of the nature of their 24/7 operations. By being on site, the NCCCS can make training even more convenient to industry and reduce the impact of pulling workers offline. Training in the lab can accommodate up to 8 people.

The mobile laboratory is another element of BioNetwork's comprehensive plan to develop a world-class workforce for North Carolina's life science industry.  It is a unique component, and assists in making BioNetwork the nation's leading network of biotechnology-related training and education.

Powering a Greener Future
The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is committed to the development of a greener and more diverse energy supply through the potential of Biofuels. The UNC Pembroke Biofuels project shares the University’s commitment to the intellectual, economic, social, and cultural life of the region, the state, and the nation by encouraging faculty, and student research that enhances the life of the region through outreach and technology transfer.

The Biofuels Project will research new methods of producing various biofuels, such as biodiesel and ethanol, through different chemical, biological and technological processes. The goals of the Biofuels Project are to enrich the life of the region, state, and nation through the three areas of Research, Education, and Economic Development.

The goals of the UNC Pembroke Biofuels Project are to enrich the life of the region, state, and nation by:
  1. Researching new methods of biofuel production.
  2. Serving as a source for educating the general public on scientific, environmental, and economic issues related to biofuels.
